Andrey Melnichenko is a Russian-born billionaire industrialist who built his fortune after the collapse of the Soviet Union, first in banking and then through the coal producer SUEK and the fertiliser group EuroChem. He is widely reported in mainstream media as the owner of the 119m Motor Yacht A, delivered by Blohm+Voss in 2008 at a reported cost of around US$300 million; ownership is held through corporate and trust structures rather than in his own name. He was sanctioned by the European Union in March 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and reporting indicates he transferred his beneficial interests in SUEK and EuroChem to his wife, Aleksandra Melnichenko, immediately before the listing — an arrangement that remains contested in European courts. Unlike his other vessel, the 143m Sailing Yacht A (seized in Trieste in 2022), Motor Yacht A avoided seizure by relocating to the UAE and has since been re-registered under several flags, so its current registration details may be out of date.
